US pilot unions receive approval to conduct study into single-pilot cargo aircraft
US pilot unions have hit out at Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) plans to conduct a study into the use of single-pilot cargo aircraft.
Contained within the FAA Reauthorization Act of 2018 is a programme that would see the FAA, in consultation with NASA and other relevant agencies, establish a research and development programme in support of single-piloted cargo aircraft assisted with remote piloting and computer piloting.
Initially the parties will conduct a review of FAA research and development activities in support of single-piloted cargo aircraft and, within six months of the enactment of the act, will file a report on the possibility.

Project Wing’s drone delivery system moves forward with testing
In a suburb of Canberra, in Australia’s Capital Territory, Project Wing’s drone delivery system is facing its toughest test yet. The project team wants to find out how well unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) will compete with other modes of home delivery.
That testing has not only moved from the countryside into the suburbs but is gathering real-world data on the value to users is a sign of the maturity of Project Wing’s delivery system. And its drones are not the only ones serving customers, with pilot projects underway in several countries and coming to the U.S.
Amazon continues testing in the countryside in Cambridge, England, but publicly is talking more about its work on the UAS traffic management (UTM) system required to enable drones of all stripes to make safe and efficient use of low-altitude airspace. Drone Delivery Canada successfully completes first test flight in United States
Drone Delivery Canada ‘DDC or the Company’ , is pleased to report the Company completed a series of successful test flights during the week of March 5th, 2018 in the United States of America at the Griffiss International Airport located in Rome, New York.
“Testing at Griffiss was a natural extension for continued progress with our platform in a BVLOS non-segregated airspace environment. American company HorseFly Truck launches Drone Package Delivery System
Workhorse Group Inc., an American technology company focused on providing sustainable and cost-effective solutions to the commercial electric transportation sector, today announced that the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) has issued a patent, number 9,915,956, for the HorseFly Truck Launched Drone Package Delivery System.
The HorseFly UAV Delivery System is a custom-built, high efficiency delivery UAV that is fully integrated with the Workhorse line of electric/hybrid delivery trucks. The HorseFly system conforms to FAA guidelines for UAV operation in the U.S. Most notably, being fully integrated with delivery trucks, the system is designed such that a driver or driver’s assistant can maintain line-of-sight operation of the UAV delivery process. Four Norwegian technology companies are collaborating to use unmanned helicopters to carry cargo between offshore vessels and offshore installations.
The weather is a big challenge when cargo is going to be lifted with a crane between offshore vessels, rigs and other installations. The operations depend on wind, visibility, waves etc. Weather conditions at sea often lead to delays in delivering cargo, goods and equipment for offshore installations.

DROP ZONE COCKATOO, QUANTICO: You can hear it over the roar of the wind and the distant thump of mortar rounds: the high-pitched buzz of miniature drones. I track the incoming quadcopter with my camera until I’m starting to bend backward and I realize it’s hovering directly above me. That’s my cue to move, shortly before a contractor nearby hits the “release” command on his tablet and the drone drops its cargo with a klunk: a metal ammo magazine.
The magazine is empty — no live ammunition for today’s test — but it shows what could be done. All day long here, racking up more than 400 sorties, Marines and contractors are tapping tablets to summon mini-drones from a central “Hive” to drop empty magazines, canteens and MRE ration packs on demand. During last week’s FAA Symposium in Baltimore, Amazon, Boeing, GE, and Google announced that they are ready to start working on the development of a private Unmanned Traffic Management (UTM) system for drones. Testing in conjunction with NASA is supposed to start in the next three months. The system will enable swarms of drones to fly a couple of hundred feet above the ground using cellular and web applications to avoid collisions and allow for remote tracking.
A “TOTALLY DIFFERENT, NEW WAY OF DOING THINGS”
Amazon, Boeing, and Google have already expressed their visions of deliveries made by drones in the future. The companies have also started testing these new technologies on small scale. However, large-scale use of drones to make deliveries will require a robust drone traffic management system, that will prevent drones from crashing into each other or, worse, manned aircraft. 3D Printing, Unmanned Aircraft to Revolutionise Logistics
Logistical support for forward-deployed Marines will be revolutionized in the coming years by new technologies like 3-D printing, unmanned aircraft and “smart” logistics gear that can be networked to solve problems faster, a top Marine said.
“We’re looking to see what is the art of the possible and try to apply those visionary capabilities that are being developed to what we need to do,” Brig. Gen.
