UPS announced that it has begun testing the use of drones to make commercial deliveries of packages to remote or difficult-to-access locations, working together with drone-maker CyPhy Works.
Testing began on Thursday when the companies staged a mock delivery of urgently needed medicine from Beverly, Mass. to Children’s Island, which is about three miles off the Atlantic coast. The drone flight advances an investment made by The UPS Strategic Enterprise Fund in CyPhy to gather information about drone uses and capabilities. UK ‘should be leading’ on integrating new drone technologies. The issues of UAVs and airspace management were debated at Cranfield University’s Technology Conference Visions of an Autonomous Future on 16 September 2016 part of its celebrations of 70 years since the foundation of the College of Aeronautics.
Our air traffic control systems run on the basis of principles which are now 60 years old. It’s no surprise then that the appearance of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) in our air space is seen as a serious and unmanageable threat to safety. UAVs straying into fligh tpaths are reported as major incidents, Japanese airports have started to use anti-UAV nets, a US technology firm is selling a ‘drone death-ray’. Hovercraft can travel over land, water and ice. The technology behind the Hybrid Airship, the cargo-hauling ship of the skies, allows this hybrid craft to travel virtually anywhere. What is a hovercraft? It’s part boat, part airplane and part helicopter. While it may look a bit odd, how it works is quite simple. It’s an amphibious vehicle that travels on a cushion of air created by a downward blast. Hovercraft use air to balance their weight, allowing the craft to operate efficiently. Hovercraft can also operate across nearly any terrain, including land, water and ice.
It’s this characteristic that makes hovercraft technology the ideal match for the Hybrid Airship, the cargo-hauling ship of the skies, enabling the airship to access remote locations around the world. Continue reading “Hovercraft technology – the ideal match for the Hybrid Airship (Video)”
There are dozens of videos on the Internet showing small, unmanned aircraft delivering medicine, packages, pizzas and tacos.
If you believe the hype, the skies may soon be crowded with these vehicles.
Last week, the Federal Aviation Administration took a big step toward defining this future by enacting the rules and regulations known as Part 107. Continue reading “Current drone traffic control system cannot scale to manage the volume of forecasted traffic”
Domino’s will start delivering pizza via drones in New Zeeland this month, after trials performed earlier in August.
“It doesn’t add up to deliver a two kilogram package in a two-ton vehicle,” said Scott Bush, a general manager for Domino’s Pizza Enterprises, which is independent of the U.S. chain and operates in seven countries. “In Auckland, we have such massive traffic congestion it just makes sense to take to the airways.” Continue reading “Domino’s to start delivering pizza via drones this month”
